If you are changing a diaper at 3am, the closure decides how that change goes. The fabric decides everything in between: how the pajamas feel, wash, and hold up. Here is how the three closures compare, what to know about fabric, and what to check before you buy.
What are the main baby pajama closures?
Nearly every footie, sleeper, and romper uses one of three closures. Everything else is a variation.

Are magnetic baby pajamas actually easier?
Yes, and the reason is specific. A magnetic closure does not require alignment. You bring the two sides near each other and they find their own position. Every other closure asks you to line something up first, which is the part that gets hard when a baby is squirming or when the room is dark.
That difference is not small at 3am, on the fourth change of the night, with one hand holding a baby still.
Magnetic closures also stay usable when your hands are full. You can close a magnetic footie with one hand, which no zipper or snap really allows.
One thing separates magnetic designs from each other: whether you can feel that it closed correctly. Flat magnet pairs attract no matter which side of the garment ends up on top. In the dark, that means you can fasten a footie with the sides reversed and never feel the difference: it grabs, it feels done, and it is not actually closed the way it should be. Your fingers have no way to tell which side goes over which. The fix is tactile. A raised guide on the closure tells your hand how the sides meet, so you can confirm a correct close by touch alone. What about snap closures?
Snaps are the traditional option and they still work. They are secure, they survive the wash indefinitely, and they let you open only part of the outfit.
The problem is time and accuracy. A footie can carry a dozen or more snaps, and getting them lined up correctly is genuinely difficult in low light. Most parents have refastened an entire row after realizing they started one snap off.
If you are choosing on speed, snaps come last. If you are choosing on availability and price, they are everywhere.
Are magnets in baby clothing safe?
This is the right question to ask, and the answer depends entirely on construction. Two details matter: how securely the magnets are attached, and what they are sealed in.
The first is straightforward. Magnets should be permanently sealed and sewn securely inside the fabric rather than attached in a way that could work loose over time and washing.
The second is where magnetic garments quietly differ: silicone-sealed magnets versus magnets bagged in PVC pouches. It sounds like a manufacturing footnote. It is actually the difference between a closure built to last and a closure on a countdown, because baby clothes live in the dryer and heat attacks a PVC-bagged magnet in two separate ways.
Failure one: the pouch melts
PVC is a plastic that softens and degrades at relatively low temperatures. Run it through hot dryer cycles week after week and a PVC pouch can warp, turn brittle, or melt outright. A compromised pouch means an exposed magnet inside a garment your baby sleeps in, which is exactly the hazard every magnet safety guideline exists to prevent.
Failure two: the magnet weakens
Heat also works against the magnet itself. Magnets permanently lose strength when they run too hot, and the damage is cumulative: every high-heat cycle takes a little more, and none of it comes back. A heat-weakened magnet still looks fine from the outside, but the closure stops snapping shut with the force it needs. A magnetic garment that no longer closes securely has stopped doing its one job, and no care instructions after the fact will restore it.
Silicone is the opposite case. Platinum silicone stays stable at temperatures far beyond anything a home washer or dryer produces, which is why the same material is trusted for bakeware and baby feeding gear. Silicone-sealed magnets stay sealed, stay protected, and keep their hold for the life of the garment. It is the reason our footies are washer and dryer safe without an asterisk.
Before you buy any magnetic garment, check two things: that the magnets are silicone-sealed rather than bagged in PVC, and that the care label does not quietly tell you to skip the dryer. A closure that cannot survive heat is a closure on a countdown.

Bamboo vs. cotton: which fabric is better for baby pajamas?
The closure gets you through the change. The fabric determines how the pajamas feel against your baby's skin and how they survive months of near-daily washing, and it is where the market is most confusing right now.
Most "bamboo" baby pajamas are actually bamboo viscose, which is a form of rayon. The word bamboo suggests a fiber that came straight from a plant. What actually happens is a chemically intensive industrial conversion. The stalk is crushed and pulped, steeped in sodium hydroxide, an industrial caustic, then treated with carbon disulfide, a solvent with well-documented health risks for the factory workers who handle it. The dissolved pulp is forced through spinnerets and chemically regenerated into an entirely new man-made fiber. Very little of the original plant survives that trip.
This is not a technicality. US labeling rules require these fabrics to be sold as rayon or viscose made from bamboo rather than simply bamboo, and the FTC has fined major retailers millions of dollars for marketing the finished fabric as if it were natural bamboo. The agency has also been clear that the antibacterial properties bamboo is famous for do not survive the chemical conversion. The plant had them. The rayon does not.
The softness people love is real. The trade-offs are durability and care: viscose is a delicate fiber that tends to pill, thin, and lose shape with frequent washing, and many bamboo garments quietly ask for cold washes and low or no dryer heat to slow the decline. Baby clothes get washed more than anything else you own, so a fabric that fades under laundry pressure is a fabric working against you.
Long-staple cotton takes the opposite approach. Peruvian Pima cotton is a natural fiber that is picked, ginned, and spun. No solvent bath, no regeneration, no chemistry between the plant and the knit. Its extra-long staple is exactly what lets it stay soft without giving up durability. It holds its shape, resists pilling, and goes through the washer and dryer on repeat without special treatment. For a garment that gets washed several times a week for months, that difference compounds the same way a faster closure does.
If softness on day one is the only measure, both fabrics deliver. But a footie gets washed two or three times a week for its entire size, and the difference shows by the end of it: one fiber is still soft enough to hand down, the other is pilling. The natural long-staple fiber wins the wash count.
What should you look for in magnetic footies?
The closure is only half the product. The fabric is the other half, and it is where quality varies most.
- Fiber quality. Peruvian Pima cotton is longer-staple than standard cotton, which means it resists pilling and stays soft through repeated washing instead of going rough after a month.
- Shape retention. Cheaper knits stretch out at the knees and cuffs. A footie that holds its shape is still wearable at the end of a size, not just the beginning.
- Care requirements. Anything that needs special handling will not survive real life with a newborn. Washer and dryer safe is the practical standard.
- Silicone-sealed magnets. Not PVC pouches. Dryer heat can melt a PVC pouch and expose the magnet, and the same heat permanently weakens the magnet itself until the closure no longer holds. Covered above, and non-negotiable.
- A tactile alignment guide. Flat magnets fasten even with the sides reversed, and your fingers cannot tell the difference in the dark. A raised guide on the closure tells your hand which way the sides meet, which is the whole point at 3am.
- Fold-over cuffs. Useful in the newborn months when scratching is a problem and nails are impossible to keep short.

How many footies do you actually need?
For a newborn, plan on five to seven. Newborns go through more outfits than most first-time parents expect, usually two or three a day between spit-up and diaper leaks, and laundry does not always happen daily in those first weeks.
From about four months, three to five is enough. Changes drop off, and you are mostly covering nighttime plus a spare.
Buy the next size up before you need it. Growth spurts do not announce themselves, and finding out at bedtime that nothing fits is a bad way to discover it.
Which closure should you choose?
If speed and night changes are your priority, choose magnetic. If your baby is old enough to undress themselves and containment matters more than access, choose a two-way zipper. If you are building a large rotation on a budget, snaps will do the job slowly.
Most families end up with a mix. The useful move is to put the fastest closure on the pajamas your baby actually sleeps in, because that is where the difference compounds night after night.
